Never Trust a Skinny Cupcake Baker (Death by Cupcake Book 1)

Cozy Mystery
Publication Date: April 11, 2016
Print Length: 155 pages

A cozy mystery with a heap of laughs, a generous portion of romance, and just a smidgen of suspense.

Callie’s life is rather awesome. She owns a successful bakery and teaches German literature at the local university. There’s just one tiny problem. She has no self-confidence when it comes to her body. And then there’s the little matter of her being accused of murdering her pole dancing instructor. There’s no way Callie’s going to risk losing her teaching position and thus she embarks, with her best baker bud Anna, on a journey to discover the real killer. Between stripper auditions and a detective who insists Callie is the woman of his dreams, it’s a roller coast adventure. Cupcakes not included.

I grew up reading everything I could get my hands on from my mom’s Harlequin romances to Nancy Drew to Little Women. When I wasn’t flipping pages in a library book, I was penning horrendous poems, writing songs no one should ever sing, or drafting stories which have thankfully been destroyed. College and a stint in the U.S. Army came along, robbing me of free time to write and read, although I did manage every once in a while to sneak a book into my rucksack between rolled up socks, MRIs, t-shirts, and cold weather gear. A few years into my legal career, I was exhausted, fed up, and just plain done. I quit my job and sat down to write a manuscript, which I promptly hid in the attic after returning to the law. Another job change, this time from lawyer to B&B owner and I was again fed up and ready to scream I quit, which is incredibly difficult when you own the business. Thus, I shut the B&B during the week and in the off-season and started writing. Several books later I find myself in Istanbul writing full-time.

Reviewed by Trudi LoPreto for Readers’ FavoriteMajor Crimes ebook cover

Major Crimes is a whimsical, fun, light hearted mystery. Michele Lynn Seigfried has created characters with great personalities that are very true to their New Jersey roots. If you are looking for a good mystery with a touch of humor, romance, detective work and more, then Major Crimes (Jersey Shore Mystery Series Book 4) is a surefire winner. The story was new and fresh and there was never any question as to what information I could be missing. This is a quick and entertaining mystery sleuth book that I highly recommend.

When Michele Lynn Seigfried entered the College of New Jersey, she didn’t have a major. She took an array of classes — art, television, acting, math, science, history, public speaking, stage building, world religions, and women’s studies — but nothing seemed to fit.

Then she took a creative writing class.

“My teacher singled me out to read my assignment about siblings out loud,” the New Jersey native said. “It told the tale of how I would threaten my little brother with flushing his chameleons down the toilet or sucking him up in the vacuum when he had gotten on my nerves. After all, what’s a big sister for? My classmates chuckled at my sense of humor.”

Here is another excerpt to hold you over!

At the end of the meal, our server came along with a tray of chocolates for dessert. I selected one, as did everyone at the table, and placed it on my plate. I wondered how I would eat it. I feared I’d look like a barnyard animal, picking it up with my hands and taking a bite, which was exactly what I wanted to do. But I refrained, if for no other reason than not to embarrass Jayce in front of his colleagues. It was too large to pop the entire thing in my mouth. I frowned and considered my options.

The hot air from the hospital big wigs began to blow. Um, I mean, speeches. The chairman of the hospital board made his donation pleas. The effects of the cosmos I drank were beginning to wear off, but I was buzzed enough that the chocolate in front of me seemed to be taunting me. I was a chocoholic by nature. A piece of chocolate in front of me was not likely to go uneaten, especially when my desire to keep my hourglass shape was momentarily inebriated along with me. I made a decision to cut the chocolate piece in half with my fork and knife. I thought that would be more ladylike, since I was attending such a high-class function.

I situated my fork atop the luscious-looking piece of heaven and dug into it with my knife. That evil little chocolate piece refused to be minimized. It shot out from under the knife, across the table, past the millionaire seated with us, and smacked into the back of Lemon Face’s head. She raised her hand to the back of her head and rubbed it along her hair. She must have felt something, but didn’t seem to know what it was. She didn’t seem too concerned about it.

My face glowed red in the dim dinner lighting. Not the shade of embarrassment; the shade of hidden laughter. I felt like a giggling girl at church. Why is it you always laugh harder when you aren’t supposed to be laughing?

I swiftly returned my fork and knife to their rightful positions to hide the evidence. I breathed a sigh of relief when I glanced around quickly and realized that the Lemon Face did not discover the chocolate bullet was mine. Everyone at my table was too busy watching the speeches to pay attention to me and my dessert malfunction. The crisis of having to explain my idiocy was averted! That was, until I heard laughter beside me. To my right, the chief of surgery was chuckling. I looked at him and was greeted by an “I saw that.”

Turning red once more, I giggled. “Please don’t tell anyone it was me.”

He shook his head and laughed harder. “I won’t.”

Jayce looked over at us. “What are you up to?”

I smirked and told him I’d tell him later. On the car ride home, I couldn’t stop laughing when I recounted how I shot Lemon Face with a chocolate bullet. It seemed hilarious to me. I had exacted my revenge on her without even trying.
