(A Jersey Girl Cozy Mystery Book 2)

File Size: 2625 KB
Print Length: 187 pages
Publisher: Cup of Tea Books, an imprint of PageSpring Publishing (April 21, 2015)

For this Jersey girl, big hair means big trouble!

Newspaper reporter Colleen Caruso just wants her unruly curls tamed into smooth, sleek locks. Instead, she finds her stylist dead, face down in a shampoo sink. Faster than you can say Aqua Net, Colleen starts investigating. The case gets even hairier when the owner of a local fitness studio seems to have jumped from a plane … without a parachute. Meanwhile, her suave editor, Ken Rhodes, steps in to help.  And he may be looking for more than just a good story from Colleen. Add in a missing bracelet, some suspicious husbands, and a little breaking and entering—and this Jersey girl is heading for a real blowout! Can Colleen tie up these split ends? Or does she have an appointment with disaster?

My Review:

Kudos to follow Jersey Author Jo-Ann Lamon Reccoppa on her second novel! Being a Jersey girl myself, I always love it when authors include references in their book that let you know it’s Jersey.  Middlesex County and the Trenton Times newspaper are just a couple of these references in this cute cozy mystery. I had to laugh when the author wrote that one of the characters was “A little on the loud side – very Central Jersey!”  So true! I too, am a little on the loud side, a little Central Jersey.  Anyway, this novel was true to the cozy mystery genre–no graphic violence, no graphic sexual references/scenes, no foul language.  I love that Colleen was a mom in the book.  Most sleuths are single/no children. I enjoyed the relationship Colleen has with her editor. I didn’t figure out who did the crimes until close to the end of the book. I also enjoyed how the author makes the situations realistic, when the sleuth breaks the laws, there are consequences for that (though not severe ones), it still makes the book more believable. A delight to read, this cozy will keep you entertained on the beach this summer!

4 stars!

About This Author

Jo-Ann Lamon Reccoppa lives in Old Bridge, New Jersey, and uses her experience as a freelance correspondent as the basis of her protagonist’s career. Several of the incidents within these pages are actual occurrences. They have been shamelessly embellished and are not a blow-by-blow account of a few really bad days on the job. Hide Nor Hair is her second novel.

Seigfried photoCommunity AffairsOur visiting author this month is Michele Lynn Siegfried with her newest book Community Affairs.  This is the second book I’ve read in the series and I have to say they just keep getting better.  What I like about Michele’s writing is definitely the pacing.  You can’t put it down.  The characters are engaging and funny and the scene with the flaming dog poop on the porch?  Is this a Jersey thing?  That is a ONE BAD NEIGHBOR.

Michele was kind enough to answer some questions about her writing and after you read that don’t forget to scroll down and find the prize guy!  Enter to win a $50 Amazon Gift Card, a signed copy of Community Affairs, and an ebook copy!

As Gouda as Dead – Review, Recipe & Giveaway

great escape tour banner large good as gouda640

Sometimes when I consider recipes for the Cheese Shop mysteries, I have to stretch my imagination and take risks, but honestly? Goat cheese in a brownie? You’ve got to be kidding me. (No pun intended…okay, maybe a little pun intended.)

I saw a recipe for something like this brownie and was skeptical, like you, about the goat cheese. It’s tangy, it’s tart. How can it possibly be good with chocolate? But it was. I promise. Adding the coffee—because coffee and chocolate DO go together—gave this delightful dessert an extra zing! Trust me. These little babies flew off the plate! They’re really good while reading a good book! Anybody ready to read AS GOUDA AS DEAD?

7 oz. dark chocolate

2 sticks butter, unsalted

1 ¾ cup brown sugar

4 eggs [For gluten-free make this 3 eggs and 2 egg whites]

1 1/3 cup flour [For gluten-free make this 1 1/3 cup gluten-free flour plus 1/2 teaspoon Xanthan gum]

¼ tsp. baking powder

1/3 cup cocoa powder

Goat cheese topping:

2 oz. cream cheese, softened

2 oz. goat cheese [used Laura Chenel’s Chevre]

2 tablespoons sugar

2 tablespoons ground espresso coffee

Preheat oven to 350°F. Place chocolate and butter in a saucepan over low heat and stir until melted.

In a large bowl combine sugar and eggs. Slowly stir into chocolate mixture.

Sift flour, baking powder, and cocoa powder into bowl and combine with chocolate and egg mixture.

Pour batter into a greased, 9-inch square baking pan and set aside.

Whip together softened cheeses and sugar until smooth. Add coffee and stir.

Place large spoonfuls of mixture on top of batter and swirl with a butter knife.

Bake for 45-50 minutes until set. Brownies will still be gooey in middle. Let cool before cutting.

Someone is cheesed off . . .

Providence, Ohio, is celebrating Valentine’s Day with weeklong events, including lovers’ baskets with heart-shaped cheeses at Fromagerie Bessette. Charlotte Bessette is celebrating by finally walking down the aisle with the man of her dreams, handsome artisanal cheese farmer, Jordan Pace. But when a beloved bar owner is discovered murdered on Jordan’s farm, he believes they should reschedule their wedding given the grim turn of events.

Charlotte is heartsick over the postponement. This killer crossed the wrong woman. No one, but no one, is ruining her wedding plans!

My Review:

As Gouda as Dead is a true cozy mystery. No blood/gore, no harsh language, romance without explicit sex scenes. A joy to read for those reasons alone. I absolutely loved the title of this book and the story was quite “yummy” with all the references to fancy foods. I haven’t read the other books in the series yet, but I didn’t feel lost in the plot or characters at all. I enjoyed the small town setting, where all the business owners know each other–true to real life. I enjoyed Charlotte and her friends. There were plenty of suspects and I didn’t figure out who did it until the big reveal.  A great, easy read for a lazy afternoon near Valentine’s Day. 4 stars.
